Hauntingly, achingly, beautiful. Intricately written so you can see, hear, smell the environment. But of course, the reader is painfully aware that we cannot even imagine the reality behind this narrative. Like all of her novels, it is poetic and mystical while also being unflinchingly raw and authentic. There are beautiful illustrations through out the book, but there are no words spared when it comes to the historical context.

Ward is absolutely brilliant. I’m not sure there’s a book or short story by her that I haven’t given a 5. I believe she is one of the best authors of our generation. I cannot wait to read more.
