challenging dark emotional sad

Very beautifully written and a very heart wrenching story. It did kind of lose me in some parts but I found the ending much easier to follow and also tied the book up nicely.

3.5 ⭐️ this book is beautifully written. Knowing that this is a book about slavery, I knew it was going to be a brutal read. I’m just not sure I fully understood the conclusion. The flip between “real life” and the spirits was hard to follow and I don’t feel like I got to know Arese as much as I’d hope to. I am probably not the right audience for this one.
