Mooi poëtisch taalgebruik, wel zware kost en geen echte spanningsboog maar eerder continue spanning. Fijn dat ik het gelezen heb en tegelijk blij dat ik het uit heb.

Not my favorite of Ward’s, but still beautiful

I found the plot and motivations hard to follow.
and why does Saphie leave and we never hear from her again? I thought she would be plot relevant

I can’t really say how much I love Jesmyn Ward’s writing. Annis will stay with me.

Beautifully written~

Beautiful narrative of a queer woman enslaved who works through classical teachings of Dante’s Inferno, stories of her warrior ancestors, and the elemental spirits around her in order to find her true self and her freedom. I really loved the lyricism in this book, though difficult to read because of the pain laced through this experience of slavery. I have more Ward waiting to be read on my shelf and I’m definitely looking forward to exploring more of her work.

Reminds me a bit of Toni Morrison’s Beloved - enslaved woman’s story with some fantastical elements. Some hard scenes. Narration was soothing, so enjoyed for that as bedtime listen.
