A lyrical and harrowing book about the wretchedness and despair of slavery in America. IMO the book got bogged down in metaphor detail.

Hauntingly, gorgeously written. Just what I expect from Jesmyn Ward.

A powerful read. Annis is a strong character, and I liked the blending of history with some mythology. This is my second Jesmyn Ward book and I look forward to exploring more of her work.

I wanted to love this book. And I did for the first 3-4 chapters. I felt like the author was trying to add so much depth to this book, but there really wasn’t any. Everything took forever to happen and it was very descriptive. There were a lot of story lines introduced, but never really followed through and there were so many people it got a little confusing at times. Also probably 75% of this book if not a little more, it’s just her talking to the spirits. Which I was not really expecting in this book and I was very disappointed with it because that was really confusing and I feel like that took away a lot of the depth to the story. Overall, I finished the story to get my cutie little bookmark on Goodreads.
*Spoiler ahead *
The ending felt very insignificant like the way she escaped was stupid. You are seriously telling me the hands wouldn’t get their horses and follow the river to find her or the others? And is that really the only way the author could get people to escape?
