I really wanted to like this book, but the use of magical realism made it so hard for me to stay engaged with the writing. The author does a good job painting a picture of slavery and all the trials that go with it, but I couldn’t connect with the spirit of Aza and I didn’t like the way some sensitive topics were handled. Sadly this just wasn’t the book for me
