I was absolutely mesmerized by Sing, Unburied, Sing — a book I widely proclaimed as the best I read that year. But i just struggled to connect to the story in Let Us Descend, as beautiful and important as the writing is. 

I’ll chalk this one up to my own error — perhaps I wasn’t in the right mindset to read something this tragic. I found myself reading the same lines and chapters trying to register what I had even read, and felt like I had to push to focus. Sometimes it felt like i was reading the rhythm of words rather than the story.

Then again, I’m recovering from a head injury so what do i know.

A tough read, but Jesmyn Ward’s gorgeous prose carries you along, makes you want more, even though the horrors are unrelenting. As always, the character development is rich. There is not one book by this woman that I haven’t gobbled up, literally clutched to my chest and sighed when I finished. Another treasure. I’ll be awaiting the next.
