I have no words to describe how raw and impactful this book was while I was reading it. The descriptive and sensory language the author used to detail the horrors of slavery in the United States and Annis' strength, vulnerability, defeat, triumph, and more was enthralling. Instead of continuing to descend into further enslavement, whether on the plantation or in the shadows of the city, Annis wanted more for herself and wanted to lead her own life. The author capturing Annis' connection with nature, spirit, and her ancestors was beautifully done.

As beautifully-written as it is heart breaking, this story of an enslaved teenager in the American South takes readers on a physical and spiritual journey.

Book wasn’t for me. I think it’s good but I didn’t like the story personally.
