Annis is the daughter of her sire and her mother, a house slave. Overhearing the tutor teach her white sisters about Dante’s Inferno helps give meaning to her own journey to adulthood.

Ward's just a brilliant writer, and Let Us Descend is more evidence to that. The writing in this book is incredibly beautiful. Some of the lines hit you with their beauty. It's not an easy read, and the story is heartbreaking and unflinching in its portrayal of slavery. It's one of my favorite books so far this year, and I cannot wait for others to read it.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of this book.

A heavy book with a powerful and important message. I think I’m not the biggest fan of the specific writing style the author uses. It’s hard to follow.

A medium-paced, dark, and emotional historical literary fiction book about a young girl growing up as a slave and how her life is inter-mixed with the lives of the women who came before her. Full of magical realism, it’s an intense but beautiful read.
