very good very intriguing! i think i kinda missed the point but i also think maybe the point was just like two people who are living their lives and trying to navigate a relationship together. so idk. but i really liked it. thanks katie:)
4.5 stars. I wasn’t sure I was going to like this because Regan is my least favorite kind of character to read about (depressed rich girl) and Aldo is my least favorite kind of person to be around (antisocial math man who can’t teach). But something about their story was so compelling I had to root for them. And Blake’s writing kept making me stop and reread and think. Gives very “if I was empty shape and you were a formless space, we’d fit.” I also loved the afterword that explained why she wrote this particular book, you can tell that the story is deeply, deeply personal.
“She’s confounding, really intricate. Infinite.”
On why we should study math: “We map things,’ he said, ‘and chart things, observing and modeling and predicting, because we have no other choice, and this is the language we have agreed, collectively, to use. Because we have agreed, collectively, that to proceed without knowledge or understanding is a stupid kind of bravery, an impulsive kind of blindness, but that to be alone without wonder or curiosity is to chip away any possible value we might discover in existing.”
“Somewhere in the universe a star exploded or someone was born or they died or time passed while Regan stood there and missed him, while she mourned him, and then she thought with an equally quiet violence: Maybe I do not have to do it alone.”

So many times during this book I marveled at the fact I had no idea how I understood what on earth was going on, what was being said, and yet somehow I just did. It truly felt like being inside the brains of the two characters.
I am not sure I understand why the writing style keeps changing but again it just does suit the story and really helps you to understand the pace of what is happening at that time.
At first I was more confused as this book dives straight in to the characters as if you already know them.
There really isn’t much plot beyond them learning more about each other. But I have read so many romance novels lately and the part where they hold hands in church and where she gives him a haircut are two of the most accurate and well written examples of how it feels to be falling in love with someone that I have read in ages.

This book was so beautiful and the story also felt raw. The prose was almost poetic and melancholic but it worked.
