I read this for my undergrad degree and I remember that I did enjoy it but I don't remember too much about it as a whole. Worth reading to study but for leisure? Maybe not so much.
this is me finding a penguin black classics and thinking, ooh, literature.
i’m sorry!!! i really tried to like it but this one lulled me to sleep. loike, literally. it’s probably the oldest text i’ve read (hello, 17th century), and wow… the writing style was just not doing it for me. i kept zoning out mid-page.
that said, penguin never misses with their introductions, so i at least felt intellectually prepared to fall asleep. thanks, penguin.
i ended up liking the reviews of this instead lmfao

Aphra, I was really rooting for you, being considered the first female author in England and all but… I wish I could give this negative stars…
Al fin y al cabo el relato está basado en un personaje ficticio porque trata sobre un hombre honrado
2.5/5 - it was okay but the narrator's pick me energy was just a dealbreaker lol don't think i've ever disliked a narrator so much
More like a novells than a novel, but Oroonoko represents one of the early examples of the novel.
Interesting anti-Dutch political undercurrents and suggestions of abolitionism and anticolonialism. Quite a read!

Considering that this is a novel written in the late 17th century by a white woman narrating about the plight of enslaved people, it lives up to what you'd expect. The plot bounces around quite a lot to a point where it is extremely hard to follow, at times. There are several racist descriptions throughout the novel, as well. There are some natural descriptions that are quite enjoyable, and there are several scenes that are packed with a lot of poignant emotion. Personally, I wouldn't recommend this book unless you're like me and had to read it for a class, in which case I would recommend examining it from a very critical perspective. Instead of reading this book, I would check out the narratives of Black authors that would better represent Black history.
