2.5 stars. I can't overlook all the intersectionality of misogyny and racism, just to acknowledge this was England's "first novel."

I had to read this for my 18th Century Restoration of British Literature class and I thought it was a pretty easy read. It's a short novel, you can finish it in a day, but make sure to pay attention to the details Behn includes and the time period everything is based around. The ending was a little bit startling for me, but overall it was a decent read and easy to understand. Not sure I would have picked this book up if it wasn't required for my class though.

read for survey of british lit

Read for Westridge book club. This book exceeded my expectations. Themes include race, gender, issues of morality and religion and of course slavery. Very thought provoking. Definitely feels like a book we would've read during high school English class.
