I think you actually have to have all of your dreams come true to realize they are the wrong dreams.”

Such a brave book that was both enlightening and terrifying. Whilst it could be rather repetitive and disjointed due to not being chronological, listening to Matthew explain his story through Audible really highlighted the extent of his struggle and I appreciate his vulnerability.

Anyone who loves FRIENDS is likely to struggle while reading Perry's memoir.

While there are mentions of hope here and there, the book goes into great detail about his ever-present struggle with addiction. I offer the three stars here because of the bravery it took to share his story and be vulnerable in such a public way, especially with how he confesses to struggle with his own self-esteem. And I do believe this book could be a turning point for some folks who are deep in their own cycle of addiction.

That said, I ended this memoir with a heavy feeling in the pit of my stomach. Somewhere, deep in my mind, I had hoped that Matthew Perry in real life mirrored the character he played on the beloved series. And yes, many things about his character were, in fact, modeled after his own life (including his turning to humor when things get too emotional, plus his very messed-up relationship with his parents). But where Chandler's flaws endeared him to the audience (and his commitment to grow was worth following), Perry's crass view of his surroundings through every phase of his life was disappointing. The book could have used some stronger editing, too – there was round after round of the same relapse story (although they were all different) that didn't particularly further his overall message, other than to convey the desperation he endured.

If someone needs a gentle nudge (or a hard smack in the face) to make the turn toward sobriety, this could be a life-saving wakeup call. But if you, like me, are a huge fan of FRIENDS, be careful. This is not a "behind-the-scenes" romp and origin story; it's a harrowing journey of self-destruction and precarious rehabilitation.

Matthew Perry is inspiring for opening up the ugliest parts of his disease to share with readers, fans, friends and family. He shares his life with raw honesty, parts of which were were emotionally challenging to read. I can’t imagine writing this memoir was an easy feat. My low rating is related only to the sublime editing — spelling errors, missed words, and excessive repetition.
