The irony and tragedy this drips with in the context of reading this after his death - a death by drug overdose, but not the drugs he ever thought - really colours the whole read. Of course he’s flawed and delusional and selfish: he was an addict, all his life and up to the writing of this book. He writes like it’s all behind him now and it’s all retrospective and he’s a changed  man but we know he was still an addict at that time because he was an addict to his death. The book tells you what it’s going to be. Don’t read the memoir of an addict if you don’t want to read the thoughts of an addict. I enjoyed it though; tragic, powerful, and very very sad.

A solid memoir detailing Perry’s life- from a rocky childhood, to his rise to fame, to time on set of Friends, to his struggles with addiction. I really enjoyed the audio, as Perry was the narrator, and many of the stories needed his classic cadence & comedic timing to get the full effect!

I grew up watching Friends. It’s where I, like many others, know Matthew Perry from. However, the internet wasn’t in our pockets then and I was generally too young to care about what tabloids said.

That being said, I had NO idea of all the hardships and struggles with addiction that Matthew Perry went through. Hearing his voice, feeling the stress and even desire, as he speaks on his addictive traits was mind-blowing.

The part that hit the hardest, made me the most sad, was the Prologue. Here he says “ Hi, my name is Matthew, although you may know me by another name. My friends call me Matty. And I should be dead.” Hearing him say this line after losing his fight to addiction in 2022, then hearing the rest of his story, almost felt like he knew the inevitable was coming, no matter what he tried to do.

I highly recommend this is you have had someone struggle with addiction in your life. Or if you adored Matthew Perry as an actor. It gives a full story into how he died the way he did and why he became the way he was.

First book of the new year and it was a 5 start read
