i loved listening to this! Matthew Perry’s voice is really comforting for some reason. could definitely be bc i love Friends so much!

i just realized that tomorrow will be a year since his death, so it’s funny i decided to listen to it now.

the only note i have is that it did feel like we jumped around a lot so timelines were somewhat difficult to grasp. i would love to physically read this to get a better idea of the sequence of events!

everything in this book was so raw, honest, and vulnerable. he doesn’t try to make the hard topics more palatable even though they can be really difficult/disturbing to read/listen to.

to be clear, the book still has funny moments. there are definitely light-hearted breaks between the heaviness, which can feel very necessary when the majority of the book is about his struggles throughout his life.

overall, i really wish i would’ve physically read this while listening, or at least had a physical copy to refer to when the timeline became too convoluted. i do feel like it was impactful to hear him narrate, though! highly recommend!

In honor of Addiction Awareness Month, I chose to listen to this heart-wrenching memoir straight from Matthew's mouth. I was a 90's baby, so I didn't watch "Friends" while it was airing on cable. I was just wrapping up Season 10 when Perry was taken from this world. I knew him from "17 Again" with Zac Efron. I instantly fell in love with Chandler, his speech pattern, and his heart and throughout the show grew concerned about his weight fluctuation. It wasn't until my husband told me that he struggled with addiction that I looked into him a little closer. According to his story, he was doomed from the start to struggle the way he had. He was a Colic baby and so the doctor prescribed him phenobarbital (barbiturate for sleep) at a few weeks old. Between drugs, alcohol, smoking, and never feeling enough for his parents at the young age of 5, he never had a chance at a normal, loving life. He was clean and sober when he died, but it was once again at the hands of his doctor.

I recommend this to everyone, whether you're a fan of his work or not.

A graphic depiction of how addiction is an illness, not a choice or lack of mental strength. Starting with alcohol to deal with his struggling mental health, an injury on set triggered a deadly drug addiction. This is a record of Matthew’s addictions, ups and downs, rehab and therapy. It was incredibly painful to hear how Matthew managed to steer clear of drugs for so many years before his illness won.

His story deserves to be shared, even though he is no longer here to share it himself. He told it beautifully and without frills. Gave me chills to hear his voice, I listen to all my audiobooks in at least 1.5x speed which worked well here. We miss you Matty, I hope you’re having a laugh up there now 🤍

Read as an audiobook! This was so hard to listen to after his death, he struggled so much and the drugs and alcohol took such a toll on him that you can hear it in his voice. Friends is one of my all-time favorite shows and it holds a special place in my heart and in my family, so I treasure Matthew and the entire cast for what they did with that show. It made me really happy to hear that he had such a positive experience on Friends and that they truly were family on set and they tried to take care of him and he tried to do his best for them. It breaks my heart that he had so many close calls with death prior to writing this book and he had such optimism for the future and truly was grateful to be alive to help others, but knowing that it eventually caught up to him and all the terrible things surrounding his death last year makes me sick. I truly hope he is in a better place where he can be at peace and is no longer in pain.
