The Zahir is a term from Islam that means something that one can become obsessed with due to an almost supernatural force. In this book, the main character is haunted by his wife that disappeared. Written in Coelho's notable writing style, this book is definitely a good read.
Fiuwh. I'm so glad to finish this book. From the first page until third half it was very un-put down-able book. But after that, the plot was too long and winding. Anyway, I like the way the character questioning life. Maybe it's true, love and despair might be the agent of change :)
One of my favorite Coelho books; an exploration of the meaning of love
This was a pretty good book. It talked about love, loss, happiness, and mostly marriage. But I think I would love it more after twenty years rather than now.
Sometimes you have to wait for the right time before you're ready for a book. This book sat on my bookshelf for six years. Earlier this year I started reading it half-heartedly. And then it all started clicking. My heart and brain where in the same place and this book felt like a balm. It's a beautiful read...
An interesting story about a man obsessed with finding his missing wife. Unlike most missing persons, she seems to have gone missing by choice. Coelho writes very beautifully about this man's attempt to better understand himself in order to be reunited with his wife. I wasn't in love with this, but I was certainly intrigued. However, I don't think it will be all that memorable down the road.
I've grown somewhat critical of Coelho's books after having read three other ones. Out of the ones I've read, this is by far one of my favorites. The story is about a man who is abandoned by his wife and must search for her, but along the way he finds himself. Mostly I enjoyed the book because I felt I could relate to it -- it wasn't as preachy as the other books and it didn't feel as unrealistic (although some elements were ridiculous). It's much quicker-paced than his other novels as well and felt more modern.
Definitely not my favourite, it was a slow read and took long to pick up. I enjoyed the last few pages but I still enjoyed the theme behind the book, was not connected to any of characters they were flawed with few qualities I attached to.
As Coelho is regarded by some to be one of the best authors of our time, I was excited to read his latest, Zahir. But my first Coelho experience was sadly disappointing. I found the story to be trite and just really un-captivating. The plot (somewhat autobiographical?) had potential. The wife (a journalist) of a fiction writer suddenly disappears after many years of marriage. Did she leave of her own free will? Was she kidnapped? Is she in danger? Alas the intrigue of her mysterious disappearance is pretty well wrapped up by mid-book ...which leaves the rest of the tome to the lead character's (endless) exploration of the (not terribly profound) musings of some mysterious mystic sect before miraculously finding himself and discovering his capacity to truly love.
Blah blah blah.
Perhaps I failed to attain the entrancement necessary to enjoy the book. It did feel a bit like watching, befuddled, a ceremony that others deem emotionally moving. This same book by another author I'd be happy enough to write off as a bad experience never to be repeated. But I have a hard time believing that this is the Coelho that so many have raved about.
