3.61 AVERAGE

fast-paced

Audio, 4.5 stars but rounding up.
The ONLY THING keeping me from giving this 5 stars is that there's a big jump in Sirscha's jump in familiarity with the Prince with very little justification or background.

There was some rushing of the story at the end that was frustrating, too, but not enough for me to lower the rating.

Excellent story! I loved this. I loved that it didn't feel like the same thing, told and retold and retold. It was so refreshing to have a more unique fantasy world, while still being accessible and engaging.

When is the next one coming out??!

it was kind of hard to get into and i felt a little bored through the beginning of the book. i wasn’t like super impressed or anything but it was still enjoyable. i’m disappointed though that the one character that ended up being my favorite died. i think part of the reason i struggled was because i’m usually a romantasy reader and there wasn’t any romance. it was good to listen to while at work though and i’ll probably continue with the series. the ending was actually pretty good and i didn’t even see the plot twist coming
like i never could’ve guessed that ronan was secretly keeping the soulless in stasis
i found the magic system confusing, i got through it by relating it to the grishaverse lol

I finished this a couple of days ago. I didn't love it. Here are my not at all detailed notes that I took while reading:

-awkward world building through dialogue
-nothing seems to be happening
-so much telling instead of showing, and I don't know why I should care
-at one point it was like a laundry list of what had happened to the people she had run into
-very little emotion to the story, and what little was there was very repetitive

3.5/4★

I absolutely adored this book!

The ingenuity and craftsmanship of the worldbuilding and magic system (and thanks for the glossary at the front) was intriguing, and I thoroughly enjoyed taking a journey of self discovery with the main lead, Sirscha. I thought the humans vs shamans vs shadowblessed conundrum to be quite captivating as each of the three races are held together by a mediator that turns out to be another corruptible power head. The crafting of the unease surrounding magic and its limitations and risks, as well as, the civil conflict within the magic community, I hope continues to retrospect to the ending of this first book, because now war has broken out, the dynamic between people's has become much more tense and I'd really like to read Sirscha's take on it all, now being both Evewynian and shamanborn, and bred into war. I think it lacked a little, and I want to see more of how the different races of Thiy are brought together and a little more background on the leaders on these races. Even Queen Mei seemed a little too unfamiliar despite her name appearing in the book a lot.

I loved Sirscha's spirit throughout the whole book, and her tenacity, and her inability to give up even in the face of her biggest fears.

Sirscha's character development has been immense and I'm eager to see how she further develops knowing that she, and her gifts, could easily be corrupted or manipulated into harnessing darker power, similar to the Soulless (But something tells me she won't be)
The ending was a whirlwind, I kind of had a feeling about the Soulless still being alive because it made sense to me for Sirscha to battle the Soulless as the soul guide (which part of me still believes she is/or could be).

I am very excited to see what happens next - but I want to see more of the Princes (
