This started as a 5 star read for me. It opened brilliantly imo, I was really intrigued by it's weirdness, the vibes, and the dream-like haze. At first it made me feel like I was run over by a bus, chewed up and spit out, all the while intruding on someone's anxiety-ridden dream.

Unfortunately as the book goes on, it sort of ends up being the same thing over and over, lifting the haze and it's weirdness just feels normal. It does not evolve at all, there are no character arcs
except maybe Stephan but even there I'm hesitant to say he got an arc
, no answers or progress. I do appreciate stories that are just vibes, and I could understand a purpose of a story like this if it were shorter, but as the book spans over 500 pages it just gets too repetetive and, frankly, boring.

There are a few passages later on in the book that do bring it back, which just reaffirm my belief that this book would have been amazing if it had been significantly shorter.

I do appreciate that Ishiguro gives us main protagonists in his books that start as fairly likeable, gentlemanly and polite men, but the more you get to know them the less you like them until they become absolutely detestable. I do find that a very interesting thing to explore. At least in both the books I've read of his.

Being a huge fan of Kazuo Ishiguro for years, I have to admit that I don't get along with this one. I constantly get annoyed and grow increasingly impatient with all the characters while reading it.

so slow. i really wish i could enjoy the first 400 pages of the book more bc it was so hard for me to pick up on the message; only near the end i started realizing how good of a book this is.
ishiguro's books are always so thought provoking

Un travail d'artiste. Un peu long quand même...

DID NOT FINISH: 35%

I read Part 1 and I hate it. It just reads too much like a dream - so much like a dream that I just feel unnerved and while I assume it was on purpose, there wasn't enough payoff to keep going. I'll read it eventually, but will have to be in the right headspace to tackle.

This novel is so Kafkaesque, briliant! Recommend to someone who can appreciate this kind of never quite getting there, the novel holds you in suspense. Anyone who wants resolutions, structure and sense, do not read!
