Couldn’t get through this! Way to slow, characters were unlikeable and when deciding whether or not I should give up, all the reviews said the ending wasn’t satisfying - so that did it for me. I’ve read other books by this author but sheesh! This one was tough.

This was a very strange book. I adore Kazuo Ishiguro. His intimate writing style is incredibly compelling. In this novel, the main character is seriously disoriented. It's as if he has amnesia, finding himself in a strange city where he is expected to know what's going on and can't remember anything or anybody, can't really figure out what he's doing here. Slowly over the course of the novel he puts pieces together. At the same time, he is also omniscient. He can listen in on others' thoughts--and others treat this as a matter of course! This does feel like a crazy dream, where time is distorted, places and distances are mixed up, and people are surreal. I think Stephan is him as a young man, and Boris and he are heading down the road as Sophie and Gaspar. I got bogged down in irrelevant minutiae and it got a bit tedious at times. The description of music is fascinating and strange. This is just a very strange novel.

This is Ishiguro for people who REALLY love Ishiguro, and I am one of those people. A stress nightmare as a book.
