Wow guys, I don't think I've ever been more conflicted about starting a series before. Despite my four star rating, I have some issues with this first volume that are preventing me from committing to this series 100%. The best way to get my point across with conflicting reviews is, as usual, breaking this volume down in pros and cons. Let's get this started.
Cons (yes, we're starting with the cons, deal with it):
1. Itadora swallowed the finger. Itadora. Swallowed. The FUCKING. FINGER. I know that manga (ESPECIALLY Shounen Jump titles) often requires readers to suspend their disbelief when it comes to how characters get into the situations they're in, but ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?! Fushiguro straight up told him the finger was a SPECIAL GRADE CURSED OBJECT and that it was REALLY FUCKING DANGEROUS, and Itadora's just like, "okay, cool" and FUCKING SWALLOWS IT, ARE YOU SHITTING ME?! It what alternate universe does a teenage boy look at a CURSED FUCKING FINGER and be like, "hey, if it'll help me out, why not?" And yes, I get that he did it because he thought it would help him save his friends, but there was literally ZERO HESITATION with him swallowing it and after he's told he has to swallow the other pieces he's just like, "yeah sure, fam" and I'm like, "WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?!" No joke, after I read that scene I just stared at the page because I couldn't fucking believe what I just witnessed. Okay, that out of the way, let's move on.
2. Maybe it's because I've been so spoiled by Shounen Jump protagonists like Nagisa from Assassination Classroom, Midoriya from My Hero Academia, and Tanjiro from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, but Itadori being the "stupid but really strong" main character is REALLY FUCKING BORING. To put this in perspective, here's a quick list of all the main Shounen Jump characters who fit that criteria off the top of my head:
-Monkey D. Luffy from One Piece
-Yusuke Urameshi from Yu Yu Hakusho
-Rokuro Enmado from Twin Star Exorcists
-Naruto Uzamaki from Naruto
-Jirou Azuma from Black Torch
-Yu from Seraph of the End
NEED. I. GO. ON?
Let me make this clear: I don't dislike Itadori at all. He's perfectly serviceable for the plot. My problem is that he doesn't stand out because he falls into this vague and saturated category of main characters.
3. Some of the fight scenes had confusing transitions or confusing artwork. There were at least two occasions when I couldn't tell what action had taken place to get the bad guy's reaction or something happened at the transition didn't line up with the previous action.
Pros:
1. The artwork/art style is REALLY STRONG. The curses looking FUCKING TERRIFYING and the action sequences are so cool. The powers are also FUCKING DOPE, holy shit Fushigori summons shikigami with shadow puppets?! And Kugisaki uses a hammer and nails?! I'm sold!
2. Speaking of the characters, while they're not terribly interesting, I do like their group dynamic and how they interact. Also, Gojo's so fucking chill, I love him. But yeah, I actually really like them so far and would like to learn more about them.
3. I'd actually like to learn more about the lore. Anyone who knows me knows I eat supernatural shit like this up SO DAMN QUICK, I love it.
That's about it, really. While I'm conflicted with committing 100% to this series, there was a lot I liked and would be interested to at least read the next volume. I was a little hesitant at first, but I think this has the makings of a good series. Here's hoping volume 2's good!

I watched the show and it didnt quite capture me, so now im brute forcing the series into my head by reading it :)
