honestly i had a long review planned out to explain the low rating i’m giving this book but i just can’t be bothered anymore. the only reason why i picked up this book was that i needed to see character growth from both cree and dawn. unfortunately, they were still the same people from book 1.

it striked me while i was reading, about how sad dawn’s life was. literally everyone around her treated her as if she was something to be owned. aside from lipa and paul, everyone didn’t put much stock into what she had to say. she was often given orders, and was expected to follow them with no question.

the relationship between dawn and cree was akin to that between a dog and its owner. cree mentioned countless of times that dawn was his and only his. at first you would think it is cute, after that you would think, “oh wow okay, this man is possessive!” but after chapters after chapters of him saying the exact same thing—not caring about what dawn had to say—you would feel absolutely disgusted.

and honestly, there was nothing to their relationship at all. all they had was sexual chemistry. they didn’t even spend that much time together away from dawn’s bed. dawn was kept in a pretty cottage, she would spend time alone there and at night he would seek her, laid with her and then he would leave the next morning. that was pretty much their whole routine. there was simply no time for them to get to really know each other, which was disappointing.

as i’ve said before, i picked up this book hoping for some sort of character growth from both cree and dawn but i got none of that. dawn was kind, courageous, yes but was there anything else there was to her? she didn’t stand up for herself against cree—she couldn’t, because he simply wouldn’t let her. sure he gave her some sort of leeway because she was his mistress but come on! the bar is so fucking low.

and don’t get me started on how cree was to be wed by another woman and deemed it right to keep dawn as his mistress forever. dawn also didn’t seem to care. i was so fucking fed up.
