Nick is trying to change his destiny. He doesn’t want to be the one to end the world and now that someone is draining all his powers he might just get his wish.

Book 7! Half way though the series!

I love how Kenyon keeps evolving her characters and expanding this world. She has so much love for her characters and it really shows in all her books.

She gave Bubba, Caleb, and Xev such a rich backstory. We learned more about Caleb and Xev’s family. We got to see the brother interact with their father. They have such a complex and painful past. There were so many betrayals and misunderstandings it shed a new light on Xev’s abandonment issues.

We also learned more about Bubba and his family. Now as a human Bubba has been able to fight along side Nick in some battles as well as help out with zombie issues. While we met Bubba’s mom in past books, this time we met his father.

While the series is about Nick, this book really shined on the supporting cast. We have seen so many of them grow over the two years in the story. I have to really give it up to Kenyon, for believing that they can carry the majority of this book.

As far as the story goes, I am so happy to see us starting to break away from Nick being the ultimate bad. The story is becoming a lot more complex.

I give this book an A-.

While in class, it's Nick's turn to get sick, and his powers begin to dwindle until they disappear. To find out who is after him this time, Nick and his friends visit the future, and other realms.

There's a lot going on in this book: flashbacks to learn about a character's past, a jump forward to learn about the possibilities, and visions. All of this info should have been spread out over the other books instead of just dumped here to make the word count.

It wasn't a bad story, but it was so disjointed and jumped from here to there, that it got a little irritating, especially when some important things were brushed over instead of detailed. *But that's probably (hopefully) saved for the last (next) book in the series.

Even though I'm confused as hell, I loved it!! I love this world, I love how it connects back to the Dark Hunter world. I was super happy to see how much more info we got on Jared and Jayden, they are 2 of my favorites in DH world, what a mess everything is in. I realize the plot didn't seem to move alot but if you really think about what happened, the implications are or could be massive, changing the outcome of everything. I always look forward to the next book in this massive and crazy world, for me, it can't come out soon enough.

The Good:

I like almost all of these characters! The parts with Xev and Jaden were particularly great!
It's just as funny as the rest. Our characters have grown so much and really bonded with each other.

The Bad:

So many unnecessary flashbacks! The one with Caleb and Lil was good but none of them were necessary.

The explanation about what Bubba's dad was was completely confusing. It read like a bad draft and it didn't help that the hell chasers or whatever went by like three different names. Not to mention Nick never said he was the Malachai but when it's mentioned Bubba's dad didn't seem surprised. It's a shame because Nick meeting Bubba's dad was my favorite part of the book!

Why did Nick have to lose his powers? We finally get a full Malachai just to depower him ugh. I want to see these powers!

At first, I was mad about Nick not being the final Malachai, the one to end the world, since that was the plot of this series but I suppose she made a good case for why Nick wouldn't do that, so though I'm not happy about it, I accept it.

Conclusion:
It sounds like more bad than good but it's still a great book! (Most of the good is just the same as all the rest. Great world building, characters, relationships...)

While Nick and company faced some challenges in the new installment, this book felt more like a set up for a bigger tale. As ever, my favorite mouthy Cajun was back in place with his ever growing crew of misfits along for the ride. Ms. Kenyon dropped a few quite unexpected bombs, future visions gave us more questions than answers, and one GIANT answer was given with the casual grace someone asking you to pass the salt might employ. The last few stories in this series have been stellar five star outings, this, was a good story, but not much happened. However, if I had my druthers for not much happening and getting to hang in NOLA with Nick and friends, I'd be pretty content.

Once you look over some of the grammar errors through out this book and being confused as hell for a portion of it the story overall is great. I will say I wish they would of tried to separate the flashbacks or visions he was experiencing from the present. Half the time I couldn’t tell there was a shift until names of characters I really didn’t know where being talked about. They finally explain that the Eye is causing these very sudden images and visions he is seeing but until then it was confusing as all get out. All those grammar errors though were really really bad and hard to look past when it would make me have to reread portions of the book. Also I don’t appreciate the cliffhanger at the end though just makes me want to buy the next book ASAP.

Favorite lines that I feel need to be mentioned:

His grin turned even more debonair as he ran it under his nose and smelled the stylus as if he could still detect her light perfume on the wood. “Mmm, I’ll treasure it always. Thank you for your kindness, my noble lady.”

“ . . . you need to make sure you keep your fishing pole in it’s closet. And not go visiting someone else’s pond with it.”

I really enjoy this series, but this installment left a lot to be desired. While it did move the storyline forward, it was hardly a stand-alone. The plot was a setup for the next rather than a whole story. When you wait a year or more for each book, it's really disappointing to only get a teaser when your expecting a novel.
