I read this in one sitting while at my local library and had to keep myself from crying. This is a wonderful depiction of grief and dealing with events in our lives that shape us in ways we never thought we'd be shaped. The visual metaphor of Diamond the cat as someone Lou wants to help, and Bea wants to keep safe because she's alone, was very well done. I've read Walden's Spinning and really enjoyed it, but the colors in Are You Listening were gorgeous. There were a few full-page spreads I wanted to hang on my wall. I definitely need to sit on this book for a while and read it again when I get the chance. I want to buy it right now. Incredible. Heartbreaking. Everything I needed to read right now.

Some quotes I loved:
"It was cool when it was just my mom being proud... and when I got to see that I had this... talent. But now it's something people in town tell. Now it's something else." (p. 46).

"Usually when I'm really busy I can just swallow everything down. But without work I feel kind of... unhinged." (p. 90).

"'I fell right next to him. Broke my arm.' 'That's horrible.' 'It wasn't that bad. I got a cool cast.' 'No, not that. That he didn't catch you.'" (p. 148).

"You told me. You told me. That's fighting." (p. 203).

"'Everything you've seen is built by you. Which is why you'll never see it again.' 'That's bullshit. IF that were true then everything around me would be on fire because that's how I feel.' 'If that were the case, then we'd smell smoke. Some part of you is still solid because, well... everything is still here.'" (p. 256-257).

"I wish I could go back to believing there were things that weren't possible." (p. 287).

The story was hard to follow because it was unclear if we are in the real world or a world unique to the book. In the moments that it was clear, it was really touching but overall I found it to be emotional for the sake of being emotional and tried to tell a unique, heart-warming story but just fell short.
