Moderate: Rape, Sexual assault, Sexual violence, Incest, Panic attacks/disorders, and Death of parent
Minor: Sexual content, Homophobia, Kidnapping, and Violence
Pedophilia warning is for a potential romantic bond between an 18-year-old and a 27-year-old, who first met when the former was a child no less - somewhat ambiguous, but still implied.mals_reads's review

This is one of those books that fans of magical realism will absolutely adore - and non-fans will be questioning anyone's five star review of it. But that's okay, because Are You Listening? is a masterclass in the magical realism genre that I feel like Walden just excels in.
Bea and Lou happen to run into each other on the road. Bea is in the middle of running away and Lou is on her way to her aunt's house. When Bea tags along in Lou's car for the road trip, their true reasons for leaving home begin to reveal themselves. Add in a magical cat, some foreboding men they meet on the road, and a truly sob-inducing backstory panel and you get Are You Listening?
This book easily makes it onto my list with titles like Crying in H Mart, where I love it an inordinate amount but I'll never be able to read it again because of the way the content inside sucker punched me in the gut. Will I still wholeheartedly recommend it? Yes.
Content warnings: death of a parent, grief, mentions of homophobia/queerphobia, sexual assault, rape, incest
Graphic: Grief, Rape, Incest, and Death of parent
Moderate: Homophobia
The rape/sexual assault is suffered by Bea and is carried out by her older male cousin. Lou is struggling with the death of her mother and being unable to come out to her beforehand.tomatocultivator's review
