The history of the dispossession of the eastern Indian tribes should be required reading for all Americans. Author Saunt reveals the true stories of the greed of European Americans to steal the lands given by treaties to the different tribes.

Students in the US generally learn of the ‘trail of tears’ early on in grade and high school history, but one doesn’t get the full extent of the impact that occurred in the 1830’s in the forced movement of the native population in the Southern US. Though it isn’t surprising it is shocking at times. Another historical aspect that’s well covered in the book is the underreported war that was started with the Seminoles in FL, one that was like our own Vietnam in the swamps and backwaters in our own country.

One of the blurbs on the back states "the parallels to the present are eerie" and I don't think I could say it any better. If all you learned about this period in US history in school was the Trail of Tears, you really need to read this. It started a little slow for me, feeling a little like a dissertation that was expanded into a book, but by the 3rd chapter, I was hooked. No one gets a pass in this account yet there's no overt blaming (there's no need to shout what's obvious). It's engrossing, heartbreaking, fair, and exceptional in how it balances perspectives and voices. It's rare to read something so necessary without it feeling like taking medicine, but this is one of those rare reads.

I only wish that had more content, I think this could have been longer I would have valued understanding more about life west of the Mississippi and everything that continued for decades. As I write this I realize the book may never have a good stopping point if that was the road taken.

This book is so, so important to understanding the true narrative of US History. Heartbreaking story but written very well.
