Dracula was, funnily enough, exactly what I expected. In the way that I knew it would be absolutely not what I would expect, and I was right. Had the same experience with Frankenstein, was immensely entertained with that one, and now had even more fun with Dracula.
I knew nothing about this book going in, apart from Dracula is a vampire, has a castle, and there's probably some horror, but more horror to the people of the time than horror for me. And, like, all of that was true. Frankenstein back then turned out to be an extremely calm story with a lot of letters (well, just letters), and I kind of assumed this one would be similarly calm, and for me it really was. But where Frankenstein was sometimes more ... not exactly boring, because I was never bored, but something like that, Dracula was not. I had a really good time reading and listening to the story, and is was very calm, but it had also higher stakes, in my opinion, there was never a point where I thought nothing was happening, and just ... there was a lot more suspense.
That's not to say Frankenstein wasn't like that, I loved the story, and it was still a 5 star book for me, but Dracula somehow just entertained me more, I enjoyed the characters more, and the setting and scenery in general was just more fun for me to read about.
Also Dracula against the power of friendship is just a really great concept in my opinion.
Really entertaining, so happy I read the book, would absolutely recommend, 10/10 would (and probably will) read again!

this was one of the first books I read and I remember enjoying it. But after reading it again as an adult, I realized it's not as suspenseful as I remember. The writing style is somehow rigid, which is what I usually expect from classic authors. I'm still giving it four stars, because of the good times it gave me as a teen.
Konečně jsem se dostala k Drákulovi. Ve škole jsme dostali hroznou bídu od naší učitelky literatury, která je hodně goth a taky trochu čarodějka a taky trochu cursed, že jsme to ještě nečetli.
Čtení mě hrozně bavilo v rámci projektu dracula daily a následném globálním bookclubu na tumbleru in 'real time' od května do listopadu. It really got me through some hard parts of this year.
Miluju. Miluju všecky postavy a nejvíc Minu Murray/Harker, my hero. <3
Naprosto nezapomenutelné scény, boss fighty s drákulou, slíděníčko v temných mansions a na hřbitovech, a taky incomprehensible horrors nejdřív Jonathana v Transylvanii na hradě a potom s Lucy a její postupnou transformací do vampýra. Sweet, sweet Lucy a taky girls being pals sitting by the fire undressing a výletky do Whitby, a boys being boys and did you know there is also a freaking COWBOY. Klasické námluvičky, láska and humanity and how it wins in the end after all.
My homeboy Bram napsal fakt skvělou šílenost.
Miluju všechny, co se podíleli na bookclubu a vytvářeli memíčka, a taky seriózní vědecké a novinové články. Zjistila jsem, jak vypadal shorthand system (těsnopis?). Miluju oblivious Jonathana na začátku a ferocious Jonathana s kukri knife na konci. All the Hungarian recipes and queer dreams after cooking with paprika. The whole paprika discourse. Crawling down the wall, lizard fashion. The horrors na palubě Deméter. All the new dialects. Abraham Van Helsing! a jeho monology o kukuřici. Blood transfusions před znalostí krevních skupin (a navrch trochu morfia a červeného vína, you know, to recover). It's garlic flowers not bulbs! Dracula going to the London zoo to get a fucking wolf and then procced to chuck it through Lucy's window. Mina doing all the super important secretary work.
A epilog ve stylu Harryho Pottera and so on.
Totální láska <3
