A brilliant example of how the power of polyamory can overcome the spookiest of obstacles and save the day.

Okay, let me say that I was not adequately prepared for how insane this story would be. If you think you’re in for a purely stuffy, gothic tale— you are sorely mistaken. If you’re on the fence about giving this classic a go, here are a few REAL THINGS that occur in the VERY SERIOUS GOTHIC CLASSIC:
  • In Dracula’s secret lair, our protagonists are surrounded by a swarm of thousands and thousands of terrible rats. A character produces a whistle and summons three small dogs that scare away all the rats. These dogs are never mentioned again.
One of our protagonists encounters the terrifying Count Dracula in a spooky coffin, and his first instinct is to smack him in the face with a shovel.
Our protagonists hire a locksmith to make their burglary look more legitimate. This works.
A doctor refers to his patient as his "pet lunatic" and he is consistently framed as a great doctor.
Dracula has genuinely insane powers that need to make a comeback in vampire lore, such as climbing up walls like a freaky lizard.
Dracula, much like Krampus, has a sack that he uses to transport kidnapped children. He feeds the children to his harem of pretty vampire ladies. Who are these ladies?? Don’t worry it’s never explained.
One of our protagonists is a texan cowboy who carries around Winchester brand rifles.

I could talk about these characters for a full uninterrupted hour, they’re so silly. They’re written as Victorian protagonists, so they are at all times good and moral and correct. And I wasn’t actually mad about it here. While reading, I rotated between referring to them as “the scooby gang” and “the polycule”. Because why are they always kissing each other and weeping together and declaring their love and fealty to each other?? I’m obsessed with them.

I wish I could rank this one higher, because it was so buck wild, but the prose could just be so incredibly difficult to slog through at times. Like, why are we spending 6 pages on
a newspaper article describing a storm

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone on the basis of its story. Just be aware that the reading experience itself will sometimes be a challenge.

I had such high expectations for this book but it turned out to be rather dull.
