Was a little painful to get through as there were hardly any events of merit. Maybe it was the narrator of the audio book but the plot fell flat for me, and I found the characters a bit obnoxious and one-sided.

As always Anne Tyler does not disappoint. What a lovely lovely story. I hate Denny!

i would not read this again or recommend it to someone. this book was character-led and had no plot; if thats your thing.
i liked most of the characters (denny is my fav) but there were some crazy WRONG things normalized in this book that were hard to ignore or sympathize with.
the writing style was pretty good. things flowed together nicely. i would have changed the timeline of the book though. they started in the present and told family stories later in the book. i think it would have been more impactful had they told the family stories first. but i guess with Juniors character, it made sense the way they did it, i guess?

This was a book group selection and to be honest if it wasn't for the book group I don't think I'd have finished it. The book is a character study rather than a plot driven story. I found it very difficult to engage particularly in the first half of the book. The later sections tell the story of the previous generations and there was more to be interested in but still I didn't feel much for any of the characters and not much happens.
I feel like I'm missing some of the subtleties, this book does have great reviews, but I think I maybe need just a bit more plot to enjoy a book.
