I really liked this play, but it wasn't really what I expected. I knew Antony and Cleopatra were some of the most famous lovers in history, and I wanted to learn more about their story and the history of the time. I just didn't expect the characters to be the way they were. Antony was so back-and-forth; one minute he was livid at Cleopatra and the next he was professing his love again. Of course, it's Shakespeare, so all the characters are a bit exaggerated. I really did enjoy the story, and I appreciated learning a little more about the history. Cleopatra was portrayed differently than I thought. I guess the problem I had with it was the two were completely lovesick. I really loved Cleopatra's witty banter, though. And I really liked Enobarbus. The story was pretty great, actually. I got to like it more at the end. Actually, for a tragedy, I liked it a lot more than usual. This is my 13th of Shakespeare's plays, and I try to read at least one every summer. I will say Twelfth Night is still my favorite, but this is in my top 5 now. I really enjoyed the way the power shifted so often between the characters and the witty banter throughout.

“no more but e'en a woman, and commanded / by such poor passion as the maid that milks / and does the meanest chares.”
really enjoyed, especially paired with the specific adaptation i watched!
i really like shakespearean tragedies and this one specifically appealed to me because of the historical theme and my interest in history generally.
i enjoyed the humour that was woven throughout, it broke up the tragedy generally and made it a bit easier to consume.
