A very quick read that oozes Hawkin's typically high-quality prose. The setting is very bleak as a lonely old man living in an isolated cottage endures a cold and rainy storm. But he doesn't endure alone after he discovers a young girl lying in a field. But is she really just a girl, or is she something more? And what about the disturbing and otherworldly black flowers that blossom around his home once he welcomes the girl? The character development is handled very well, capturing the voice of the lonely old man and how he reacts to this stranger. Perhaps he sees this strange girl as a kindred spirit.

Probably the most rewarding thing about reading this story is the powerful descriptive language the author uses. He does such a wonderful job of portraying to the reader exactly what he wants us to see, to the point where we can almost picture it in our minds. This is especially effective during the finale when the young girl's terrifying true nature is revealed. This is gripping stuff and I cannot wait to see what Hawkins has for us in the future.
