Though I did enjoy this one, it really dragged towards the end as the journey felt longer & longer into the ice. Could some of it been cut? I'm not sure. The campfire interactions and memories build the characters a lot. I am still shaky on understanding the light/dark powers that Snorri & Jal are uhhh gifted with... The aspect of it being based upon their own cultural background made a lot of sense, but I end up wondering if this is a magic thing or a Builders-related tech. Of course this is only something to consider based on the world created from the previous Broken Empire books. I want to say this one is much more, straight up medieval journey. It took me ages to finish this so I'll give the series a break for now & try to get thru a couple other books in my TBR pile.

Decent read, the author continues doing well creating the world he has made. It's interesting to see this book bump into his previous trilogy and how they interact. I found it enjoyable and if you've enjoyed Mark Lawrence's previous work you'll enjoy this as well.

DNF. I could not get into this book and did't like the main character.

Just a very, very solid story with interesting characters, going through good arcs. Jalan and Snorri are perhaps my favorite fantasy duo now. Lawrence's writing continues to get better. I regret not finishing this back in high school when it came out.

Great addition to the Broken Empire Universe

Jal isn't quite Jorg but the man brings humor to the universe I fell in love with. Second act takes a little to get going but ends spectacularly and I can't wait to read Liars Key!
