What a beautiful book. Mason Buttle has SUCH a good voice for a first-person story. Lots of genuine emotion and complex, worthwhile lessons. This book could easily have been trite or simplistic, but it kept dodging my expectations--I typically could guess what was going to happen, but then it always happened in a way that was a little different from the most obvious way. Mason is so loveable and good, but still human, with plenty of moments of annoyance or anger. Nobody expects him not to stand up for himself, even while they regard his gentleness with respect. Lovely friendships. (Some) lovely adults. Grief and longing alongside hope and curiosity, with nothing cheapened.
Other reviewers make a fair point about the bullying not being adequately handled, especially with some heavy revelations near the end. I thought that was pretty realistic, but I get why some readers would like more clarity, especially in a book targeted at children.
