The Land of Oz

L. Frank Baum

3.6 AVERAGE

I mean this was fine for what it was but it wasn’t anything amazing…. Quite misogynistic but I’ll give it some grace for that for being from over 100 years ago

cute!
love an ozma moment. also "we have decided never to be parted in the future" scarecrow and the tin woodman kinda gay

Given Baum's reason for writing this (wanting to capitalize on the success of the stage production of The Wizard of Oz by focusing on the two popular characters from the play, the Scarecrow and Tin Man), it SHOULD be booty. However, this is a very different and fun Oz story, where we follow the boy Tip as he escapes the evil witch Mombi and goes on an adventure with his friend Jack Pumpkinhead. It's sloppy, and there's some weird continuity issues (the wizard, it turns out, was evil, but this was later immediately retconned), but Baum finds his groove with these Oz stories and continues to build this wonderful fantasy world. It's kind of weird having an Oz story with no Dorothy, but it's also pretty nice to see a different side of this world, with nearly all-new characters instead of it being a lazy retread. Great stuff.

It’s an additional story in Oz. I like that it revisits the Scarecrow and the Tin Man.

The beginning was criminally slow and I was finding it hard to care about these characters because they are a little too silly for me but the ending… I wanna know… I will try and read this series very slowly because I will easily get exhausted and stop for who knows how long so I’ll find out eventually about their adventures
