This book was okay. Dorothy is not in it at all, but the scarecrow, tin man and Gilda are. There are new characters and the storyline is silly, weird and adventurous like the first one. I was surprised by the ending when the main character Tip, who is a boy turns out to be the princess of Oz (Ozma), they had been looking for. He/she was stolen and changed into a boy by an evil sorceress working with the Wizard of Oz to hide her so she could not become the Queen of Oz. Kind of crazy when you think about it. I would like to one day read the additional books, but I don’t have any currently and would prefer to get through some other books I own first. Perhaps one day.

I found myself jarred by the blatantly sexist undertones at one stage. Still age appropriate as long as your willing to have that converstion with the little ones.
Moderate: Sexism
I don't know what to say i know this world has inspired movies, theater, songs and much much more. I can also see as a young child i may have enjoyed it a lot more, and to have this kind of imagination when the book was published was incredible.
But....
The book felt like a trip, I felt i had fallen into someones head who had to many special cigarettes, or biscuits, i jumped from one place to another with flowers turning to women, Woggle bugs (im still not sure what this is) boys turning to girls......
I did love how characters had thoughts and came to conclusions... that makes the book unique... But the world a bit to dizzy for me.

While I enjoyed the story overall and really loved the details about Oz and its amazing denizens, I was a little put off by the bickering and the self-centered attitudes of some of the characters. (I had a similar problem with Winnie-the-Pooh's characters being pretty self-centered.) This book also made me reeeeeeeeeeeeeeally want to watch Return to Oz, as it uses some elements from this story (Jack Pumpkinhead, the Gump, Mombi - although Mombi seems to be used in a very different way, and I am wondering if that will come up in a different book).
I'm happy to be re-reading this series and hopefully I'll get all the way through this time.

As a long time Wizard of Oz enthusiast, I was truly surprised that I hadn't read all of the books. In fact, I had only read the first one and it was such a long time ago that I had no recollection at all. The first thing I noticed was the fact that Baum used a lot of adult references such as the puns and just overall comedy that I think would possibly be lost on children nowadays. I'm not sure if kids in his time were smarter but he surely wrote books to include enough real world humor. I really loved the goofiness of the entire thing. There were so many times where I caught myself laughing or smiling while reading. I also find that I was able to better understand both the Wicked series and The Wiz (featuring Diana Ross and Micheal Jackson). Maybe they should go back and redo the Wizard of Oz and include more of the other books. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this childish and goofy book.
I definitely wasn't expecting that twist. It's amazing to think that this was written as a children's topics like feminism and politics and even transgender topics were present in this book which is odd for its time. Can't wait to read the next book in the series!!!!
