The Marvelous Land of Oz is the second of the Oz books but really the one that sets up most of the rules of how Oz as a magical land works. Dorothy, the protagonist of the initial book (and many subsequent ones) is absent in this one, replaced instead by a boy named Tip and his traveling companions: Jack Pumpkinhead, the Sawhorse, and the Woggle Bug. This volume is also the first in many examples of why dystopian Oz stories strike me as so improbable.

Second in the series of Oz books and just as enjoyable as the first one. Loading the third book (audiobook) up on my iPod now. I'd say these are a little overlooked in the modern world, and should be checked out for those with a little kid still inside them somewhere.
3,5*
nice book, not so nice casual sexism!!!!

é um livro divertido, mas tem partes não tão divertidas ( = bem machistas!!!!!)

I actually enjoyed this a lot more than the first one, though I fear much of the humor went over my little reader's head.
The second book, The Marvelous Land of Oz is much stranger than the first. It definitely endeavors to grapple with some feminist (and possibly gay or trans?) issues but I have no idea what the underlying message, if any, was supposed to be. Very surprising in any case.

Some aspects of this book have aged about as well as milk (General Jinjur and her army of revolt would fit right into in an old-timey anti-suffragette political cartoon), but like the previous book, it's counterbalanced by a substantial cast of powerful and compelling female characters.
Speaking of female characters, there's a genuinely cool plot twist at the end that I won't spoil here. While not handled as well as it would be in a more modern book, the fact that it's there at all in something published in the early 1900s is pretty impressive.

Moderate: Misogyny
Weird book but the characters had less development and the some of the characters were not enjoyable. The scarecrow was dumb instead of smart and the tin man was full of pride. I did like the witch and the army. They brought a unique element to the story.
