I expected a lot of things, but I didn’t expect the descent into madness and the description of the wallpaper. It made my skin crawl, between the paranoia of the woman and the fact that abuse like that is easy enough to commit and happens every day. Maybe not quite to the extent in this story, but gaslighting, isolation, etc., is still used all too often to control people.
