Earthlings has really similar themes to Convenience Store Woman, particularly surrounding ideas of societal gender roles and expectations, conformity, bodily autonomy (or the lack thereof), being a social outcast, and sexuality, but takes it to some crazy and disturbing extremes. The main message is really "We Live In A Society" if you cranked the Freak level (the Freak-tory one might call it - IYKYK) to 1000, but you don't know which Freak crank you're turning.
The book kept me hooked with the insanity that just kept getting worse - something heinous would happen and you think it can't get any worse and then it does. I appreciated the fast pacing, especially considering events in the plot. Despite the disturbing nature of the book, I think the concept (and how dedicated Murata was in committing to it) and the points raised are valuable. The discomfort you feel while reading the book is definitely intentional.
Despite all that, I do like the book. Lot of trigger warnings for this one, so just keep that in mind. This is definitely not a light read in terms of content, but I could recommend it if you're looking for something dark and disturbing.
