This book is extremely sad, but also disturbing. I went into this blind, which I highly recommend checking trigger warnings. I see some of what the author was trying to say/do, but I feel like parts could’ve been done differently. The characters experience a lot of abuse. I really wanted to have this be a five start read for me but some of it really just doesn’t sit right with me. I’m still open to reading more by the author, I just think this was not the book for me.
I was curious what the message of the book was in relation to the choices the author made. Most people say it is conformity, which if so, I feel could’ve been done differently. I do think if the message is more unresolved childhood trauma then the choices feel more on the mark. I think some of the abuse is touched on lightly in a way it shouldn’t been.

This was a lot. It was well written and even though it was distressing to read it was also fascinating with sharp social criticisms. The disassociated perspective of the main character creates a surreal story that has an almost cozy vibe. Cozy horror? If I’d read the trigger warnings beforehand I would never have started this book. I think it’s a testament to the skill of the author that I don’t regret reading it.

Oh my goodness this got so dark so fast. This is probably the craziest and most disturbing book I've read.

Earthlings has really similar themes to Convenience Store Woman, particularly surrounding ideas of societal gender roles and expectations, conformity, bodily autonomy (or the lack thereof), being a social outcast, and sexuality, but takes it to some crazy and disturbing extremes. The main message is really "We Live In A Society" if you cranked the Freak level (the Freak-tory one might call it - IYKYK) to 1000, but you don't know which Freak crank you're turning.

The book kept me hooked with the insanity that just kept getting worse - something heinous would happen and you think it can't get any worse and then it does. I appreciated the fast pacing, especially considering events in the plot. Despite the disturbing nature of the book, I think the concept (and how dedicated Murata was in committing to it) and the points raised are valuable. The discomfort you feel while reading the book is definitely intentional.

Despite all that, I do like the book. Lot of trigger warnings for this one, so just keep that in mind. This is definitely not a light read in terms of content, but I could recommend it if you're looking for something dark and disturbing.
