Aku pertama kali mendengar nama Liv Strömquist di kelas Hypatia Indonesia (kalau tidak salah di kelas Politik Klitoris). Saat itu Bu Ester berkata bahwa Liv membuat komik, dan di dalamnya membahas sesuatu yang serius dengan lucu tapi tidak kehilangan keseriusannya. Kalau tidak direkomendasikan Bu Ester, aku sepertinya tidak akan membaca buku ini karena cover bukunya tidak membuatku tertarik. Atuh, please lah. Yang edisi Bahasa Spanyol aja covernya lucu dan memberi petunjuk kalau ini buku grafis lho....
Tapi isinya beneran bagus dan lucu. Celetukan dari penulisnya, walau disampaikan dengan kocak, tapi ngena dan membuatku berkata, "iya sih."
Sayangnya, karena buku ini banyak membahas sejarah, porsi tulisannya menjadi sangat banyak. Belum lagi, penulis memberikan catatan kaki dalam panel - panel tertentu. Walaupun ini buku grafis, jadi agak perlu konsentrasi dalam membacanya.
Sebagian besar isi buku ini pernah dibahas lebih detail di kelas Hypatia sehingga lebih mudah bagiku memahami apa yang disampaikan penulis dan guyonan yang disampaikannya.
Terima kasih penerbit dan Google Books yang menyediakan buku ini dalam bentuk digital. Jadi tulisan - tulisan yang terlalu kecil bisa di zoom in.

so great! it took me two and a half years to read this book because the man who sold it to me made a weirdo creep comment to me and it took a while to get excited about the book again.

This is kind of a brilliant comic, about the biologically female body, and the historic, societal/political, and biological implications placed upon it. The parts on sexist history totally disturbed me, but it’s also very empowering and educational, and amusing, for all genders. Made me realize how much meaning we place upon things is just in our heads.... and thus we can totally flip damaging scripts.

I felt like I needed more Strömquist after Prinssi Charlesin tunne, so Kielletty hedelmä felt like a logical next step.
Even though I gave both four stars, I would say I enjoyed this ever so slightly more than Prinssi Charlesin tunne. This felt more personal and warm, while simultaneously providing me with mounds of new, fascinating information about the history of women and our vaginas.
This is something that I think everyone should read, both men, women, and between.
