A fun time with a cast of diverse found family and inverting the Chosen One trope, where the Chosen One is an elderly woman instead of a teenager, accompanied on her journey by her anxious nursing home orderly, a teenage Chosen One wannabe, and a mysterious and troubled elf. The only things that bothered me here were the rapid POV shifts, even in the same paragraph, as well as the villain origin story. For a contemporary world with magic and dragons, where smartphones and the Internet still exist, the villain's origin story could have easily been dealt with by an anonymous online support group.

Man this was…it was great. It’s a story about an unexpected Chosen One, her found family and learning to do better with trauma - generational and current.

I feel like I gave it a somewhat lower score because Clem drove me nuts because she was so hard headed, but her character growth was fantastic

The abuse in the Knights was very familiar and something I’m glad was something I only lightly experienced when I went to military school. My two years at that school were tame compared to hazing I’d heard about from the Academy or years before in the college. The abuse and hazing I’d heard about, I felt for for the Dragonriders. Because I knew people that held onto those memories. Some of them did not get the help they desperately needed and turned into assholes who I’m glad I don’t speak to anymore

And Anderson doesn’t bury the gays that made me so happy
