What a delightful and heartfelt adventure! My friends and I have made multiple jokes about the tweet that inspired this book and I'm so glad that someone wrote a story based on it.

E.M. Anderson has written a beautiful story with complex characters navigating various mental health issues, competing destinies, and grief.

Highly recommend for fans of classic adventure and people who know the power of little old ladies.

Thanks to Midnight Meadow Publishing for a copy to review!

This was incredibly delightful, but not without its heavy moments. Edna is such a fun character to get to follow on her adventures, always with her knitting in her bag. This fairly stubborn old woman living in a nursing home, worried over her hips and knees, is still nonetheless excited about an adventure that’ll take her away from regular bingo nights.

There are many heavy moments and the author has brilliantly balanced the hurt and pain with some levity in this story. The main character is grieving the death of her son, as many characters are grieving the deaths of their family members. The villain causes quite a lot of death and destruction so this is by no means a lighthearted read. But still, somehow the author has made these characters feel like family in a way that we can grow and laugh and cry alongside them.

The Remarkable Retirement of Edna Fisher is a good fantasy, turning the Chosen One trope on its side with an 83 year old woman instead of a plucky teenager. The book ended up being not what I expected, but I think that was a good thing. There are lighter, funnier moments but this is a serious story with themes of grief and trauma and abuse. I really liked it but didn’t connect to it as much as I would have liked. That was probably more due to my life at the time rather than the book itself. I hope to read more from the author in the future.
