A ver, a ver.

Wow... A gut-punch of a book. Not an easy recommendation, as certain scenes covers sensitive topics. Read it if you can handle the CW list! I mean it, check them out!

A lot of world-building; gory and graphic descriptions; a chilling and disturbing dystopian world; thought-provoking; found the story confusing at times and the characters hard to keep straight; lost a lot of interest about halfway through.

A lot of the description in this book could've been removed and nothing would've been lost. At first I thought it was building the environment but it continued throughout the entire book. There was a lot of storylines that I don't think added to the story and could've been taken out.

I think this would've made a great short story/novella, but as a full novel it was hard to get through.

This book got me.

Like a lot of horror, its much better if you experience the story unspoiled, so I won't go into the details.

But this author is good at taking mundane everyday life and twisting it into something unbearable to look at.

Also, the worldbuilding here is phenomenal. A lot of horror relies on the contrast between the safe, normal world of the everyday and whatever is encroaching upon it. Which can work well, but I think I like horror that requires worldbuilding better. Horror that is baked into the reality of the story at a fundamental level.

This story is not set in a typical American town. It seems like it is at first, but the ways in which it's not creep up on you until you realize exactly where you are.

Also, this book reminds me strongly of the phenomenal horror podcast 'The Magnus Archives', and, as one of the villains in this book is named Magnus, I wonder if that's entirely a coincidence.

I went into this book thinking it would just be an all-out gore fest, people eating people, let's see how much we can shock the reader extravaganza. Yes, there were shocking parts. Parts that were so descriptive and gory and cruel I could barely read through them (the descriptions of how the meat is processed and especially the parts where the author talked about the calves.) But, there was a story here, too. There were characters you liked, characters you hated. You wanted to keep reading to see if the characters you hated were going to get just what they deserved. The story itself is pretty predictable. It's no big secret what the "meat" everyone eats is. I figured out too the secret about Shanti, but that still took nothing away from this book. The story itself and especially the afterword will make you think twice about where your food comes from. I can definitely say that when I started reading this book, I didn't think it would be one that I would end up giving 5 stars to. I am pleasantly surprised at that. D'Lacey definitely writes a good story.
