This is my favourite (so far) Risdaverse book. I think my favourite by Ruby Dixon altogether! Maybe I’m like subconsciously a furry or something but I think I prefer the praxiians over the mesakkah???

Kim has a problem in the form of a praxiian neighbour terrifying her. She thinks he’s going to kill her to steal her farm so she hires a bounty hunter to find her a husband who can protect her. Except the praxiian neighbour, Nassakth, hires the bounty hunter to deliver him as Kim’s new groom. He’s besotted with Kim and what Kim thinks were threats were actually just his culture’s way of courting.

Nassakth was such a misunderstood gentle giant. He was so patient and considerate. Kim took a long while to warm up to him (despite the premise it’s very much a slow burn) but when she did, they were so sweet together. They both had traumatic pasts in slavery and bond over their similar experiences, but the trauma wasn’t super angsty and didn’t take over the story.

I did feel like this was a bit overlong and dragged in some places.
And the whole part at the end where Kim goes all self-sacrificing and melodramatic was a bit much IMO.
Still, I loved the romantic arc and the way these two characters learnt to trust each other.

Bethiah the bounty hunter was an absolute riot. I hope to see her more in future books.
