So. I had never read this before. And it was an "I should finally get around to this so I can see what the fuss is about" sort of book for me. And. Well. I think that what I got out of it was not what I was supposed to get out of it?
See, everything about this book is completely ridiculous. The worldbuilding is ridiculous. The characters are ridiculous. The eponymous games themselves are ridiculous. Absolutely nothing about any of this makes even the slightest lick of sense. But rather than leaning into the nonsensical camp value, this book maintains a perfect stony face from the first sentence to the last, and has the appearance of taking itself completely seriously. Which just made the whole thing come across as even more satirical, somehow.
Do I think this was how Collins intended this to be read? No, probably not. From what discussion of the book that I have seen, most people do seem to take it seriously. And I don't think I've ever heard either Collins or anyone else saying "no, no, you're all missing the joke!" But something something death of the author something something? For me, as I read it, I couldn't help but conceive of it that way. And if this actually truly was intended all as one big joke, then it is honestly an amazing joke.

It was a good book with a creative yet somewhat predictable plot. I thought it was a great book except for the ending: there was no real closure.

I will probably watch all the movies after I finish the books.
