After much cajoling by a friend that I MUST read this before the movie is released, I acquiesced and read it. I found the first book fairly engaging and not as similar to other post-apocalyptic teen fiction (did you know that was a sub-genre? It is.) as I thought it might be. It was quite dark which was not surprising so much as notable.
My expectations for this book were not very high so I think I was pleasantly surprised.

The book made me really appreciate how they set up the first movie and what they decided to keep in and leave out. This almost feels like a behind-the-scenes that reminds you just how young Katniss is with her inner dialogue, while the movie does a good job of showing what happens during the games for characters outside the arena, like the districts, Haymitch, and Seneca.
