Really worried this was gonna be another diet-Poirot story but it significantly improved when he arrived and played like a classic locked room mystery. Good fun!

"Murder is a habit"

Someday I'd love to solve one of these before Poirot, but alas it wasn't this time. It took a little time to follow the Nurse and her viewpoint but I found it much enjoyable once I did. I always was a little fascinated with archaeology so I wish they went into it a little bit more. Although I loved learning about how they clean dirt and clay from pots they find.

When Nurse Leatheran took a job with archaeologist Dr. Eric Leidner to care for his nervous wife, she wasn’t expecting to find herself at the center of a murder mystery. But after the wife receives ominous letters that escalate into her untimely demise, suspicion clouds the air like Mesopotamian dust. Enter Hercule Poirot, casually traveling nearby (because of course he is), ready to unravel the bizarre twists and turns of this archaeological adventure.

The narration by Nurse Leatheran is a delight—it’s conversational, relatable, and feels like gossip over tea with a friend. And the plot? Pure brilliance. With ten (or more!) possible ways the story could end, I was constantly second-guessing myself. Just when I thought I had it figured out, the story swerved in a completely unexpected direction, leaving me both frustrated and thrilled.

Murder in Mesopotamia deserves a top spot in any crime/mystery lover’s collection. It’s compact, masterfully written, and keeps you on the edge of your seat without overcomplicating things. Bonus points for being a perfect pick when you’re in a reading slump—it’s short, sharp, and irresistibly intriguing. Who knew murder and archaeology could pair so well?

It was clear to nurse Amy Leatheran that something sinister was going on at the Hassanieh dig, something associated with ‘Lovely Louise’, the wife of the celebrated archaeologist Dr. Leidner, who was just murdered.

After struggling with one or two books, I expected to struggle with this one as well. On the contrary, whenever I opened it to read it, I'd end up reading it for an hour or longer.

Sometimes I jump over the unnecessary dialogue in novels, but here I was obsessively reading everything, paying attention to every detail.

The story is phenomenally interesting and you never guess the murderer (or at least the motive). I've read a couple of Christie's novels and so far I've never been disappointed.

I have no negativity to spread about this one. It was a great read.
