Overall a fun read. Unique super hero story that feels inspired by super man without copying super man. Liked both main characters.

The narrator was just okay though. The way she pronounced Perez drove me crazy. And some of her accents/characters weren’t differentiated enough. But overall, she was good and didn’t ruin the story.

Recommend this fun superhero romance.

I'm not usually a huge fan of time travel books as I find they are always very sloppy and tend to have a ton of plot holes but this one was actually pretty good. It wasn't perfect by any means but I still really enjoyed it. The characters were fun and I am a sucker for a superhero story. I can't wait to continue the series

“You weren’t the only one who was afraid,” Danny said.
“But you never let that stop you,” Ayanda said. “You just stood there, demanding to be loved.”

This was incredibly, irresistibly good, and had all the hallmarks and allure of a soul-mate romance. There are a lot of things, now that I'm thinking back on it, that I would have liked for this to have done a little bit differently just so that the reader could really feel the weight and impact of the relationship between these two women and how truly meant-to-be they are. But in the moment, while reading it, I was really swept away and I really fell in love with this romance.

It's a superhero romance between a US Marshal who is assigned to the team of one of the most powerful superheroes, strangely, because she was asked for by name. When she meets Focus, the heroine in question, she feels this immediate, inexplicable bond. The story goes on from there, and it involves aliens and dragons and time travel, all the while Danny and Focus get to know each other. This is one of the few books that actually genuinely had me sold on the concept of love at first sight, even though that's not exactly what's happening here. But I immediately fell for their connection, how sweet Focus was to her, how protective she was. Focus is a really famous superhero and Danny has had a crush on her since she was a kid, and I do love romances where hero worship turns into a genuine connection. The sections where they got to know each other were so lovely, and I really wish we'd seen a little more of it, in the early parts of the book. There was just an inevitability about the romance, even beyond the inevitability that we have as romance readers, knowing that the story will end in a happily ever after. It feels like a fated mates bond; it was SO intense.

I will admit, there was a certain lack of urgency at certain times during the plot, because we always sort of know the direction that things are going, and where Danny is going to have to end up. But I still did like all of the events that took place in between, all of the different sides of Focus that we got to see, and the plots that took up the space in between. The dragons were really fun, and I hope to see more of them in future books in this series. The side romance was really cute, and really, I wish that this book had been longer for a lot of reasons, and one of those is because I wish Rachel and Cecile could have gotten a bit more page time. There's all of the usual copaganda that you can expect when you have a main character who is a fed, but I was willing to immerse myself in this world and the fiction of good cops. It helped that the issue was actually addressed in various ways throughout the story (three cheers for Danny's mom).

I also really enjoyed the way that the world-building was done, the way it was parcelled out to the reader in little bits. It was also just really cool world-building in general, kind of alternate history, kind of sci-fi. It sometimes had a movie-esque feel, and honestly, it worked for me. I'm glad that there are more books set in this universe. Though I'll be sad to be saying goodbye to Danny and Focus. They are so lovely together, and they had my whole entire heart.

Listened to the audiobook as read by Jennifer Pickens, and really enjoyed it. She has a very similar voice to one of my favourite narrators (not sure if it's an alias) and so it was easy to acclimate to her style of narration. Really great romance all in all, and I'm super glad to have found a new author to follow.

She wasn’t in love with Ayanda yet, but that sentence always ended with ‘yet’ in her heart. Somewhere along the line, she’d just accepted that she and Ayanda were inevitable.

This doesn't quite blend superhero fantasy and queer romance as well as I'd like. The pacing is a little odd (the ending goes on for quite awhile which makes the climax seem anti-climactic). And the development of the MC's is a little disproportionate (how many times do we need to check in about the same feelings after months and months?). And there's an inconsistent effort towards world-building (i.e. let's spend several pages being incredibly detailed about some custom firearms but when we visit another planet we fade to black immediately without any detail at all).

But.

The characters still manage to be lovable. The plot still manages to be solidly wrought enough to hold things together. The world-building we do get (the firearms aside) is pretty neat especially considering what a hodge-podge it is. And I will rep the heck out of any story written by a fellow trans woman and I will not apologize for that bias.

There's a seemingly infinite capacity for this world to expand in future novels, which the author does, and I will definitely continue at some point.
