I was recommended the series by a book group member. I read Until the End of the world straight they and could think of nothing else. Then that person said oh yeah the city series is about Cassies brother. I jumped right in it and I am wowed. Who knew all that was going on in the city! This author has a real talent. I do recommend this story hard.

People in this book have this perverse pleasure in hurting Sylvie every chance they get and I genuinely don't know why she keeps on forgiving them. Honestly, if I were her, I'd have left the lot of them long ago.

The shit they said is seriously skipping over the unforgivable shit.

So satisfying to return to Lyons zombie apocalypse and read the stories of people merely mentioned in her previous series. I love how beautifully Lyons crafts personalities and relationships into changing, growing things tugging at your heartstrings. Wonderfully and believably failed individuals trying their best to survive and live in a nightmare....I don't think anyone does this sort of emotional apocalypse better.

3 Stars for Story, 4 Stars for Narration by Therese Plummer & Luke Daniels

Mini-Review:

Yet another zombie story without a lot of suspense or mystery but a strong cast of characters that you can't help but like.

The narrators did a great job on taking on the various characters in the story. Plummer did the female voices and the Daniels brought the male voices to life. It's not one of those jobs where they take a chapter each. It's actually mixed between the two. The book splits POV's between Syl & Eric. I much preferred Eric's accounts over Syl's. It was even better once they were in the same place but that may have more to do the romantic in me. =)

Totally fitting read for Halloween.

For a book about apocalyptic zombies, I definitely expected more action, more thrills, more sorrow, more pain. With those expectations, this book almost came across as light-hearted for me. I think I read this too soon after "The Unnamed Midwife", a totally unrelated story except that it is also an apocalyptic tale. A very dark one. Mordacious is toward the other end of the spectrum with more hope and even some joy and romance in the midst of utter disaster.

The writing is well-done. Great world-building. The characterizations were a bit shallow. Maybe that was the intention? I was intrigued by Sylvie's indifference about her mom's death, but her mistrust of everyone as a result of her upbringing just came across as annoying rather than interesting. I felt nothing for anyone else.

Eh, I guess it just wasn't for me.

Very enjoyable read from Fleming. Sylvie is basically Cassie revisited, but that was fine with me.
