Here we join Dr Bairstow as he forms the institution of St Mary's, gathering a staff of unlikely misfits each bringing their own unique skills to the team.
A short story but I agree that it would probably make a little more sense if read after book 1 rather than before it. Without giving any spoilers there are things that we find out in book 1 which may make this piece make more sense (as much as any book about time travel can make sense.

I'm boosting this to 4 1/2 on re-read. The foreshadowing so early in a long series... it's pure art
A fun look into how Dr. Bairstow started St. Mary's.
I imagine that this short story would have been much better if I was familiar with the series before starting it. But it was very intriguing and I definitely want to read more to find out what is going on.

This is an excellent story about how St Mary‘s came about and how the “cast” joined it, with enough vagueness to set up future plots. The author narrated it herself and I thought it was perfect. This should be read after reading the second or third book, once you know the characters better. Officially it should be read after the first book. Such an extraordinarily fun series.
