This novel was a touching story of the true sentiment of motherhood. It conveys the endless love between mother and child, and how a mother will do anything to protect her young. I started this read on Mothers’ Day, ironically, and it made me reflect on my relationship with my own daughter. I enjoyed the contrast between the two “mothers,” Jasmine and Rebecca and how they approached each barrier in their journey. 4.5 stars only because the beginning was slow to grab the reader’s attention. Overall, I highly recommend!

Interesting plotline. Found Rebecca's character to be a little boring, but I liked how the story alternates between Jasmine and Rebecca. At points, the timelines and plot felt a bit jumbled. While there was some suspense that let to intense moments, overall in the end the story was a bit forgettable.

Not very well written or plotted. Not sure why it got buzz.

4.5 stars.
this book did things to me. it's weird going from a book with the most horrible writing style in all of literature to a book like this. eloquent, emotional, and raw. reading a book like this reminds me that i do have empathy, all of the struggles and emotions the characters were feeling, i felt. this is truly a powerful and moving story that touches deep on different aspects of what it's like to be a woman, to be a mother, to be an immigrant or person of color. i obviously can't personally relate to the characters and their specific struggles as i'm not a mother or person of color, but the way author writes about their experiences was able to make me feel exactly what the characters felt. this story was so immersive, i went through heartbreak, anxiety, anger, relief, guilt and sorrow all with less than 300 pages. i really felt like this could be a 5 star read i only docked it to 4.5 because i just felt like the ending wrapped up too quickly, but other than that this book was so perfect to me. i'm sure i will be thinking of this story for a long time.
Spoiler i'm not sure if this can count as a spoiler so if you haven't read this book maybe don't read this last sentence, but i thought it was so beautiful how to prologue and epilogue lined up, it seriously brought tears to my eyes :')
