This was just okay. The plot twists were predictable and I never felt like I was in any kind of suspense.

The characters felt a little flat and stereotypical in an unflattering way. I had absolutely no interest in Jasmine’s village boy romance storyline. The whole book felt a little hollow and contrived.

There were obvious tones of typical progressive themes, but that’s to be expected. If the book was a little better I could have overlooked them.

Oof. It's probably an issue with my expectations, but this started out promising an interesting meditation on the expectations placed on women and mothers in Western cultures and in China -- and ended up a lurid melodrama.
