Such a vividly and beautiful written book when it came to the imagery. I'm surprised by lack of concern, care or interest in these characters and their development. It was just too tedious and drawn out in spots. I lost focus often; I didn't make it past the halfway mark.

It’s rare to read such a meaty novel, one full of eloquent wisdom.  It only doesn’t get five stars due to a choppy beginning.  It may appeal more to older readers.  As someone who spent time in a tiny Irish village, he definitely nails the experience.  I was disappointed he never explained what An tUsasal O Dala means.  But at least now I understand why everyone — and I mean every single house I visited — had a “Sacred Heart” lamp (like a night light) in front of a large, framed picture of Jesus exposing the heart in his chest!

Too many words - they got in the way of the story which was a good one.  A few scenes and phrases made me smile but I mostly ploughed through looking for the storyline under all the excess text.  If it were not for book club, I would not have finished.

Irish lit fic has done it again. Almost nothing really happens in a traditional plot sense but it’s just so gorgeous that the wandering journey through one guy’s recollections of his seventeenth summer is the whole point.

It took me a long time to get into this one - certainly not a book to read in snatches of time. The ending was stunning ... it was a slow burn and worth the effort but unlike all the reviews I have read on here, it didn't change my life.
